Blankfein, 52, is the son of a US Postal Service mail sorter. He was brought up in East New York, and lived in one of the area's housing projects.
Through a series of scholarships, Blankfein made it to Harvard, achieving a Bachelor's Degree in 1975, and a Law Degree in 1978.
His first job was as a tax lawyer in Hollywood, but he joined J. Aron & Co as a gold salesman in 1981, the same year Goldman purchased the business.
Working his way up the ranks at Aron, he rose to run the unit by 1994. In 1997, Goldman's fixed income trading business was merged with J Aron, and Blankfein was appointed co-head. By 2002, he was head of all trading activities at Goldman. Since January 2004, he has been president and chief operating officer of the firm.
Unlike Paulson, Blankfein is a Democrat, contributing significantly to John Kerry's ultimately unsuccessful 2004 US Presidential campaign.
Blankfein is not on the board of any other public company. He is, however, a trustee of the New York Historical Society and an overseer of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Blankfein is also director of the Partnership for New York City and of The Robin Hood Foundation. He is also said to be a Yankees fan.
Known for his unassuming manner, Blankfein was heard to say at a Goldman bash last year: 'Do I look like a master of the universe ? I'm a lawyer'.
US buyout legend Thomas H. Lee last week described Blankfein as 'not only brilliant, but he is a genuinely nice guy'.
