Although details remain a little sketchy, a man in his mid-twenties is said to have plunged to his death from an internal balcony some 107 meters up from the ground, falling on to the main Citigroup Centre reception area. The London Ambulance service was called at 2.40pm, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3pm. He is thought to have died immediately on impact. One woman is said to have been treated by paramedics at the scene, and several distressed staff were sent home after the incident.
The Times newspaper quotes an unnamed Citigroup employee, who said that 'we heard it was a guy from the 16th floor. He must have jumped because there are barriers on that floor, and they are 6ft or 7ft high, so he must have climbed over. He could not have slipped and fallen - you would have to climb up and jump'. The police are not treating the death as suspicious.
Perhaps this incident will enable us to get our own petty concerns back in perspective.
The deceased man's name has not yet been made public, although he is understood to have lived in the Kensington area of London.
Our thoughts go out to the deceased, his family, and the staff at Citigroup.
