This year's bonus round is going to be the most difficult for firms for some considerable while. Although many firms are laying off workers following huge write-downs related to the US subprime lending crisis (and the focus is again on cost management), key workers / good performers will need to be retained if firms are to continue to build revenues when more normal times return (as many soon expect they will).
