Australian investment banker Malcolm Perry has lost his $21m race discrimination claim against Dresdner Bank.

Perry claims that he lost out in an investment banking restructure last year as he was neither a German national, nor a German speaker. A London employment tribunal ruled, however, that the bank didn't discriminate against him, and dismissed his case. The banker has indicated that he may appeal. Dresdner conceded in May that Perry was unfairly dismissed, but the maximum it will have to pay Perry for this admission is $125,000.

The banker said in a statement that he was 'disappointed at the Tribunal's ruling, but I have not regrets whatsoever about bringing this case. I was perplexed at Dredner Kleinwort management's treatment of me and was repeatedly unable to get a rational explanation for their motivation.......

There remains no doubt in my mind that had I been a German or German-speaking, the bank would have made considerable efforts to retain my services'.

Dresdner Kleinwort issued a statement which said that the firm 'is pleased that the Tribunal has unanimously agreed that the bank did not discriminate against Mr Perry and has dismissed this claim.

We are an equal opportunity employer that seeks to provide a workplace free of discrimination, and we will continue to prize and defend these values'.
