The data center itself is thought to be used by a number of companies, including JPMorgan, which is believed to have told staff that some of its systems could be off-line for parts of the day today as a result of the theft. Fortunately the thieves are thought to have got away with just the computer hardware, and not any sensitive information which may also have been stored at the facility.
The robbery is thought to have taken place between 9pm last night and 1am this morning, and police are said to have sealed off the area in order to conduct forensic investigations. $4m of computer hardware is a lot to shift, but apparently there will be a ready market for those who have the right contacts. A source with police connections told Here Is The City that it is most likely that the thieves will hand off the equipment to a third-party rather than attempt to offload it themselves.
JPMorgan declined to comment on the reports of the robbery, although it is understood that the firm does use a data centre in the Kings Cross area.
Additional information: there are now reports that the bogus police gained entry to the data centre by claiming that they were investigating claims that there were people on the roof of the building. Five data staff are thought to have been tied up, although none were seriously hurt. One member of staff was treated for shock. Camden CID is appealing for witnesses.
