1. What's with all the negative comment ? IT recruitment is on the up again in the financial markets. Turbulent markets only amplifies the need for quicker and smarter technology systems, and therefore people'.
2. 'It's quiet, but nature abhors a vacuum. Patience, coupled with strong client relationships, will ensure a happy ending to 2008 - but only if you've kept yourself busy!'.
3. 'The markets have tightened, but only for those recruiters who have rested on their laurels. Also, most of the cowboys duck out when times get tough, so that's a positive. Any recruiter who has been spoon-fed relationships and doesn't know how to develop his or her own group of clients, is also likely to suffer. The rest of us will be fine'.
4. 'There's still work out there - although always best these days to check where the client is with 'internal candidates' before putting too much effort in. I'm still trucking, keeping costs down, building my network and database. The markets are always like this (relative feast or famine). Better times will return'.
5. 'I'm off to the Middle East. Firms will be hiring there to make up for the slowdown in revenues from more mature markets'.
6. 'Been playing golf since October. There's still pockets of work (distressed debt, hedge funds, commodities, equity derivatives and credit), but 2008 is not a year to think about paying off the mortgage. It's head down now, keeping costs under control and being smart about how you operate'.
7. 'My firm has just lowered my draw (what I receive against my commission) by 2/3. Not easy to make a living if you aren't placing people now'.
8. 'I am an optimist by nature, and think the job market in New York is quite healthy. All my clients are hiring in technology. Bottom line - if you are among the best of what you do, there's a job out there somewhere with your name on it. This is not, however, a market for mediocrity'.
9. 'It's quiet at the moment, but if you permit the market to dictate your work rate then you probably should be off playing golf. It's this kind of market when your real recruitment skills come into play'.
