Samuel Israel III, the Bayou Group hedge fund founder defrauded his investors of $450m, got caught and received a 20-year jail sentence. He then legged it (faking his suicide in the process) on the day he was supposed to report to clink last month. Israel surrendered to US authorities Wednesday, however, and is now in custody. And it looks like it was all down to his mum, who advised him to give himself up when he recently made contact with her by telephone.

A car belonging to Israel was found on 9th June on the Bear Mountain Bridge (which spans the Hudson River) with the word 'Suicide is Painless' scrawled on the windscreen. Investigators weren't fooled, however, and immediately launched a full-scale manhunt for the hedgie.

Israel is said to have been living in at recreational vehicle in a Massachusetts campground under the name 'David Klapp' since he absconded. The campground is around 115 miles from where Israel disappeared. The International Herald Tribune quotes the camp director, Mitch Hayes, who said: 'He seemed like a nice guy. There was nothing suspicious about him'. His mother is thought to have convinced Israel to surrender, as she was concerned about his medical condition. He is said to be in daily need of medication.

Hauled before a judge Wednesday, Israel said that he posed no threat to the community and insisted that: 'I have not done anything violent. If I was going to flee again, I would not have turned myself in'. Not taking any chances, the judge said that 'there is not the slightest possibility that I, or any other judge, would release you at this point', and he was handed over to US Marshalls.

Ironically, Israel's first attempt to turned himself in on Wednesday ended in farce. As there was no full-time police officer available in the small town of Granville, Mass., he drove on a Yamaha scooter to Southwick, telling a police officer there: 'I am a fugitive. I was supposed to go to jail, and I'd like to turn myself in'. And that he did.
