And what happens ? Well, earlier this week in London, we had 35-year-old Goldman MD Yann Samuelides accompanying his girlfriend to her divorce hearing, and heard her husband claim that the banker offered £500,000 if only she would marry him. Ostentatious ? A little.
Then, over the in the US, The New York Post has reported that Goldman partner Managing Director Richard Kimball has been throwing a series of what one neighbour apparently described as 'wild pool parties', complete with 'a lot of young pretty girls'. Kimball, who is said to be fairly recently divorced, is believed to have paid $2.5m to rent a Southampton property for the summer (he probably could have bought it for $5m). Southampton police have confirmed that they attended the property twice on August 30th, asking that the noise was kept down.
Finally, Blankfein himself has been talking about the emotive subject of bank bonuses. Speaking at a banking conference in Frankfurt, the man who earned over $100m in compensation in the last 3 years said that 'compensation continues to generate controversy and anger, (and that), in many respects, much of it is understandable'. (Ed's note - we'd be understanding, too, if we had all that cash stashed away!).
