Here's a selection of comments from our readers on Tuesday's 'I Couldn't Care Less About Former Lehman Employees' post.
1. 'I find the whole notion that the Lehman collapse was solely responsible for the credit crunch / economic collapse / people on Main street losing their jobs, etc ridiculous. And why is a pole dancer or waiter 'more deserving of our regard' than an ex-Lehman banker ?
Greed may not be good, but many at Lehman had no part to play in the decisions that brought the firm down. Admittedly, sympathy for them may be overdone, but that is more a symptom of our modern society (where we seem to want to cry over every mishap) rather than them asking for it'.
2. 'Why does everyone assume that all Lehman employees in some way deserved what happened because they had a few years of the 'good life' ?
Not everyone that worked at the firm were traders with big bonuses. There were normal people there doing normal jobs, and who were in no way responsible for the situation the bank got itself into.
And, after all that has happened, why is no-one going after the low lifes that sold these toxic mortgages to people who were never going to be able to keep the payments up in the first place ? They caused this crash, not the majority of Lehman staff!'
3. 'Incredibly obvious comments, but incredibly accurate.
I work in a financial institution and get paid a reasonable sum. However, I am surrounded by arrogant fools who think they have a divine right to be paid a bonus for the occasions they get things right, but want their employer to carry the can when things go wrong. Inevitably the employer will pass the tab on to someone else, whether they go cap-in-hand to the government or just shaft their customers. The 'fools' need to try a proper job'.
4. 'I am disgusted hearing about the poor former Lehman executive who went almost a year without a vacation, and was eventually able to take his family to Disney World. I am so saddened that Dick Fuld is probably only worth $100M, and had to sell artwork and properties for tens of millions. I only wish I had $10M to live off of..... poor them... poor them'.
5. 'Height of self-absorption for them to keep blathering about how tough it is to adjust to the real world. Let them sell newspapers or apples on the corner for a few years. They pretended to glory in the free market until it turned around and took a chunk out of well-honed smugness. Their own excesses did them in'.
6. 'Whilst I think this comment is a bit harsh, I think there is some validity in the criticism. This company did some stupid things to get itself into the mess of bankruptcy. But even worse, it was the total abandonment of ethical principles that really lead to its demise'.
