Ms Tate is the manager of a Bank of America branch in Gaffney, South Carolina, and one day last month, she noticed flags had been left outside the office. So, in accordance with what she claims are the bank's rules, she removed them. Trouble was, the flags had been placed along what was the funeral procession route for Marine Lance Corporal Chris Fowles, who was unfortunately killed from injuries he sustained in a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan.
The reaction in the US to this story was one of outrage, with locals renaming the company Bank of UnAmerica. Trying to limit the damage, the bank immediately issued a formal apology, saying that the flags were removed following 'a breakdown in communication'. But Ms Tate's lawyer is claiming that his client is being hung out to dry just because she followed corporate policy. Reading from what he claimed was a policy document, Charles Bonner said: 'Displaying other flags such as local city / county, municipalities, commemorative, military / patriotic, irregular size US flags or special-interest group flags must be approved by your consumer marketing department'.
Bonner continued: 'The bank has thrown her under a bus, and has used her as a scapegoat, claiming that she misunderstood bank policy....Once she was informed of the purpose of the flag, she went out and obtained permission and then displayed the flag. She went and got additional flags with her own money....She would like to see the truth come out. She would like to see the bank come up to the plate and acknowledge this is their policy, and that she was following bank policy'.
Although she may have only been following orders, Ms Tate may have been better served using some discretion in this matter. And to think, there was a time that bank managers were in tune with their local communities.
