Hedge Fund Fight Nite

last updated: 19 May 2008
For the 4th year, the brave and the bold have traded their suits and ties for shorts and gloves in the City’s leading charity boxing event, the Hedge Fund Fight Nite, which raises much needed funds for Operation Smile UK – a charity providing free reconstructive surgery to children and young adults all over the world that suffer from cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

Some might think it ironic, sending 12 'pretty boys' into the ring of destruction, but in the last 4 years, these lads have raised over £500,000 for charity. Adrian Fairbourn, founding partner of the investment boutique, Exception Capital, and the man who quite literally 'championed' the start of the Fight Nite, understands the benefits of focused training during the current market crisis. Said Adrian 'Now's the time in this bear market for guts and drive - and that's what these guys have got. They might not be smiling too much during those 3 rounds but their worthy efforts will put plenty of smiles on the faces of children around the world'.

As the charity's Director of Communications, Alex Talbot noted; 'We're delighted with the quality and dedication of this years fighters not to mention their competitive spirit, it's going to be another cracking event'. Luke Turpin, a senior trader at MF Global, has spent the last 5 months training for the event and is one of the youngest fighters taking part, but is he the fittest ? 'Training has been going great in the Cityboxer gym - I am there twice a week as well as running and working out, I am the fittest I have ever been!'. Luke 'The Wild Boy' Turpin as he has been now been tagged, has long supported the charity at previous events and has personally already raised over £10,000 in sponsorship 'I have been to many Operation Smile events over the years, and have always fancied being inside as opposed to outside the ring'. As the great Mohamed Ali once said 'it is preparation that is key'... but has 'The Wild Boy' done enough ?

Luke faces Dick Munton, a partner at Cinven who has over 20 knowledgeable years in European buyout's and at 52 is certainly the more senior of his counterparts. Munton however, is not unfamiliar with facing physical challenges 'This will be my second year fighting and I am really looking forward to it. If honest, I have only recently kicked off training but expect that should help get my adrenaline pumping !'. When asked how he thought he faired against his partner, Munton laughed 'I don't know anything about Luke, we haven't even met yet but I hear he is younger than me - so I guess it is up to you as to who you'll put your money on ! '. These guys have been matched for weight and fitness and age is certainly no barrier. It will be a fight not to be missed!
