The Most Disreputable Banker Ever
Gary Tendler was arrested at the Bishopsgate (London) offices of Dutch bank ABN AMRO in 2007, and charged with sexually abusing a 15 year-old girl he had previously met at a table tennis competition. Tendler, 36, was one of the best table tennis players in the UK, but has been dubbed the 'ping-pong paedophile', after engaging in a four month long 'relationship' with the young girl, during which time he is said to have plied her with alcohol, whisked her off to West End clubs, molested her in the back of his BWM and allegedly on bank premises, and pestered her for naked photographs of herself. Tendler is also said to have asked the girl whether she had a friend for one of his mates.
Tendler, who is said to have earned $242,000-a-year, is married with two young children. He says that he was under the impression that the girl was not as young as she turned out to have been. The destructive 'relationship' caused the young girl to twice attempt to take her own life. She was said to have had low self-esteem and was in mourning following the premature death of her mother.
The former banker was last week sentenced to 12 months in jail, after being convicted on 6 counts of sexual activity with a child, and one count of possessing indecent photographs of a minor. He has also been placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for a period of 7 years.
