Sex.com, potentially the worlds most lucrative domain names has been sold in deal worth an estimated $12m in cash and stock.
Escom, a group of anonymous buyers, have aquired the domain from Match.com founder, Gary Kremen. The deal ranks as the largest domain name sale of all time, besting the sale of business.com for $7.5m back in the heady days of the dot.com boom.
The site currently acts as an intermidiary to porn sites and merely contains banner adverts, as a result it ranks outside the top 1,000 adult entertainment sites. The new owners of the site said in a statement that they intend to transform Sex.com into "the market-leading adult entertainment destination," which they said would include "adult dating opportunities, sex and relationship advice, erotica, video-on-demand and live chat."
