BT has been declared the fastest UK ADSL internet service provider, while Sky have announced that they are to supply broadband and offer a free service to their existing customers.
Epitiro, an internet testing firm, have announced in their quarterly broadband report that BT, Virgin, Demon, AOL and Orange are the five fastest consumer ADSL broadband services in the UK.
Orange, Pipex and BT were actually four times faster than the industry standard at delivering email.
"Our consumer ADSL testing found that in terms of Internet performance, BT topped the overall rankings for the period April to June 2006. BT was also found to provide the fastest service as a percentage of its theoretical maximum," said Gavin Johns, Managing Director of Epitiro.
For the report Epitiro tests download, upload an connection times. They do this using 250 monitoring agents in ten locations. This is the first time the results have been made public. It only looks at ADSL providers, so, NTL Telewest and other cable providers are not included.
BSkyB has hoped on the "free" broadband bandwagon by announcing their broadband offerings. The packages come in three flavours, max, mid or base with 16mb, 8mb and 2mb speeds respectively. The base pack is available for "free" if you spend enough on your Sky TV package and is subject to a £40 connection fee and a £50 installation fee... free or fee?
